Workshop 2 (mapped to Framework Area 2: Establishing and maintaining a learning environment)
Language in Medicine
Facilitators: Callum Cruickshank and Sarah Collins
How do you think language and culture influence your practice, students' experience of education or even the patient experience of healthcare? This workshop will consider the influence of language on identity, perceptions of self and other, cultural understanding of illness, awareness of difference and inclusivity and how, as educators, we can create a welcoming environment. Using Scots Language as an example we'll explore the role of educators in supporting learners to develop cultural understanding and how our own cultures affect others. This workshop has been designed in collaboration with the School of Linguistics and the University of Edinburgh Medical School.
